This competition and trophy is named after long time member Roy Porter, who was consulted with during the club’s founding year.
Roy was a member of Ivanhoe Camera Club, and worked at Kodak. He was the person who designed the chart that came with Kodachrome film, explaining aperture settings. This chart had pictures of the sun, clouds etc, and advised what to set your camera on, to take a particular shot with a given ASA/ISO speed film.
The first Roy Porter competition started with a set subject using a disposable film camera, using 5 images to tell the story. It has now changed to 5 different subjects each year. In 2011, 5 precincts were chosen along the City Circle Tram. These included Federation Square, Parliament, Exhibition Buildings, RMIT, and Docklands.
The competition is held in November, and the prints (size 5 x 7 inches) are judged by club members. The Screwball award is also held on the same night.
