<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">News:</p>

2. An image &amp; description of Derek&#8217;s, will be in the Travel Section of The Age, either this Saturday 31/3  or the following Saturday 7/4</p>
<p>3. Rosemary is having a photographic exhibition in the gallery at Bridges Restaurant &amp; Bar, 1075 Kinglake/Heidelberg Road Hurstbridge.  It opens on Saturday 12/5/12 between 3-5pm.  The exhibition closes on 16/6/12.<br />
Gallery hours are Wednesday to Sunday, 9am until late.</p>
<p>4. Vanbars 450 Gore Street Fitzroy have a number of specials at the moment, ie Colour Munki calibrator software $450, and Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl Paper A4, 100 sheets, $77</p>
<p>5. Tuesday 3rd April 7.30pm the Intro Course at RPC, the topic is ‘Getting to Know Your Camera’-members who can assist on this important night would be greatly appreciated.</p>
<p>6. A wonderful day was had at the workshop with Ian Rolfe at Ocean Grove last Saturday 24/3/12 with approximately 29 attendees.  Jeff and Julie very kindly opened their house for members to meet, and and enjoy a delicious lunch before heading off, and putting our cameras to good use. Various sites were visited during the afternoon in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and Pt Lonsdale.  A sincere thank you to Jeff for all his preparation to make this such a successful event in the club calendar, and last but not least, our gratitude to Jeff and Julie for their wonderful hospitality. </span></p>

</span><span> Comp #3 digital entries (MONOCHROME) need to be uploaded before Sunday cut off date. Reminder, what you type as the name for your image is what we get.  If you use capitals (or not), spelling mistakes, commas, apostrophies will all be recorded against that image.  Proof read what you have typed, so it is accurate for the image!  You don&#8217;t want the judges scratching their heads.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">Reminder to members we will need tripods for the Intro course members for next Tuesday night at club rooms if you can help.</span></p>

<p>Wally also welcomed members from Ivanhoe, Essendon, Diamond Valley and Knox Photographic clubs, as well as a number of other guests.</p>
<p><strong>News</strong></p>
<p><strong></strong>1. Our next meeting on Thursday 1<sup>st</sup> March, is an outing for night photography at Southbank.  7pm, Melbourne Exhibition Centre (Jeff’s shed) on the steps facing Crown is the rendezvous point.  For those that may be running a little late, the group will then be heading in the direction of Polly Woodside.  Some members will meet at the food court between 6-6.30pm for a quick bite prior to departure. One member states there is free parking in Lorimer Street, and then a short walk to the centre.</p>
<p>2.Saturday 24th March is a workshop at Ocean Grove.  Numbers needed to be finalised by the 15<sup>th</sup> March. More details to follow.</p>
<p>3. VAPS Ballarat May 19-20<sup>th</sup> May, accommodation has been booked at the Big 4 Caravan Park.  Please let Gerry as soon as possible know if you are interested in attending.</p>
<p>4. <strong>Deadline for uploading digital images for</strong> <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Competition 1 is Sunday 4<sup>th</sup> March</span>. </strong>You are also encouraged to upload a ‘copy’ of your print for Competition 1, to enable it to be shown on the new website.</p>
<p>5. The password provided recently with the launch of the new website, is ONLY for <strong>use in the members section of the new</strong> <strong>website</strong>.  It is NOT for uploading images for digital competition.  Please upload images in same way as previously.</p>
<p><strong>Guest Speaker</strong></p>
<p>Gerard Saide is the president of the Photographic Society of Queensland and treasurer of the Toowoomba Photographic Society.  His photography interest started in 1980 in his 1<sup>st</sup> year of teaching.  He will be presenting at VAPS and APSCON this year.</p>
<p>This talk took 2 years to put together, the criteria for image selection was based on the significant impact in <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">&amp;</span></strong> on history.</p>

<p>In Le Gras, Southern France.  8 hour exposure, image is a heliograph.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">2. Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California</span></strong> by Dorothea Lange                                 1936</p>
<p>Hungry and desperate mother, Florence Thompson, with 3 of her 6 children located in a farm labour resettlement program.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">3. Moonrise over Hernandez New Mexico</span></strong> by Ansell Adams                               1941</p>

<p>Only 3 of the 6 men depicted in this image survived the war.  The image won the Pulitzer Prize in 1946.</p>

<p>A pioneer in medical photography</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">6. Tomoko in Her Bath</span></strong> by William Eugene Smith                                                   1971</p>
<p>A mother is bathing her 16 year old daughter who has Minamata disease, a neurological syndrome caused by severe mercury poisoning, first discovered in Minimata Bay in Japan in 1956.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">7. Children Fleeing Napalm Attack </span></strong>by Nick Ut                                                    1972</p>
<p>9 year old Kim Phuc, and 2 brothers fleeing. The image won the Pulitzer Prize</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">8. The Afghan Girl</span></strong> by Steve McCurry                                                                    1984</p>
<p>13 year old Sharbat Gula, was living as a refugee in Pakistan during the time of the soviet occupation of Afghanistan.  She was featured on the cover of the June 1985 issue of National Geographic magazine. Sometimes the image is referred to as ‘the Afghan Mona Lisa’.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">9. The Child and the Vulture</span></strong> by Kevin Carter                                                      1993</p>
<p>In Ayod, southern Sudan, an emaciated child. The image won the Pulitzer Prize.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">10. Pale Blue Dot</span></strong> by NASA                                                                                    1990</p>
<p>An image of Earth, taken by Voyager 1 spacecraft, at a record distance of 6.4 billion kilometres. Earth is shown as a tiny dot (0.12 pixel in size) against the vastness of space</p>

<p>An image of a 25-year-old Washington cop and a 2-year-old toddler. During a Chinese festival, officer Maurice Cullinane stooped down to coax tiny Allen Weaver back onto the curb to avoid the spluttering fireworks. The picture, earned the photographer a Pulitzer Prize<em>.</em></p>
